Designing the Stangest Condo Ever

For my Design Studio class this term, we have been working on a condo with one of the strangest layouts imaginable...I guess they didn't want to make it easy on us!
Just look at the sectional elevations and how weirdly each level stacks up on top of one another:
Not to mention the super high ceilings on the third floor. Usually, I'm all about high ceilings, but a 30 foot ceiling in a small washroom is a bit of a strange set up...think 'beam me up' type of vibe. It's something I'm going to have to find a creative solution for, but I've got an idea up my sleeve!

The stairs were also a bit of a nightmare. Any time I tried to put the stairs anywhere, a big cement post would get in the way on another level, or the landing wouldn't reach high enough and there would be a floating door, etc. I had a couple of late night sorting those out but I actually love where they ended up, so it was worth it. Here are some quick shots of the floor plans penciled in:
I'll share the aesthetic direction of the condo soon, it's pretty exciting. The client is based loosely on the needs and desires of my fabulous cousin Alicia and her husband Mike. They aren't afraid of colour, which makes it especially fun.
Oh, and if you're wondering how I draft in my tiny studio apartment, I pretty much clear off my entire desk to make room for my drafting board, like this:

My First Floor Plan

So, this assignment was a doozy.
It was for my Fundamentals of Space Planning class. We were required to draft a living room/ dining room combo, transferring a given room outline from a 1/4" scale to a 1/2" scale.
Then we had to provide a living room area with seating for 8 (Realistically speaking...whose living room readily seats 8 at all times?) and a dining table for six.
The fun part was inventing our clients (and budget woo).

The hard part? We have not yet learned how to do floor plans in my drafting class yet. We are still on lettering...
Awkward for all of us.
I spent all of last week figuring out my way through this drafting process with no knowledge!
I'm sure there are technical errors, but my prof is aware of our lack of experience with floor plans and hopefully will go easy on us. And I really like what I did. Any space with a cowhide rug, a sputnik chandelier and an  Eames Lounge Chair is pretty sweet in my books!
Right after we submitted this one, we got assigned another one! A kitchen this time.
We also need to do elevations (which we also have not learned yet eeek).
Wish me luck guys! This program is more intense than I expected.

New Lease: Planning the Layout

If you all saw yesterday's post, you know that today, I'm continuing to discuss my new rental!
Here are a few more details:
I move in in September.
I'm sharing a house with five other girls (none of whom I know yet!). We have a common living room, kitchen, dining area, laundry facility and backyard. While I'm sure I'll get along with everyone, I also like my personal space (and I'm not sure they will share my love of watching HGTV 24/7). That's why I'm happy that my room is big enough to create a studio style space that will include my bed area, office area, and own personal living room area.
Last night, I whipped up this floor plan quickly to track my ideas so far:
What do you guys think of this layout? Stay tuned because tomorrow, I'm going to show you my fabric scheme options!

Floor Plan E-Design: Girly Glamour

This is a floor plan that I designed as part of my application to the design school that I have been accepted to! It's the school of my dreams and this was my favourite component of the application process. I hope you enjoy!
